The Poshest Gas Station in Los Angeles

What had once been a decaying, dingy, low-rent gas station and more recently a white-tented behemoth was today unsheathed to reveal a slick, brand new, stunningly designed gas station!

DIY Fuel Cell Car and Experiment Kit

Kids can’t help but get excited about saving the planet when they see their own model car zoom across the floor powered by nothing but water! Fuel-cell technology is the environmentally friendly wave of the future.

The water becomes fuel before kids’ eyes as electrolysis (powered by a solar cell) breaks it into its separate components of hydrogen and oxygen, creating a gas that is then stored for use by the fuel cell when it’s time for the car to get going.

During the building process, children from age twelve can use the included 96-page Experiment Manual as a guide to performing thirty experiments on such subjects as the effects of direct and indirect radiation, the characteristics of a solar module, constructing and loading a reversible fuel cell, and decomposition of water in the fuel cell, plus they can design experiments of their own. The kit contains everything children need to build and experiment with their fuel cell and car (except 1 quart of distilled water)

Storing Digital Data In Bacteria

For people who want to ensure their words last for their progeny, Japanese scientists have found a way to literally put a message into genes.

A research team said it had developed a technology for storing digital data in the DNA of bacteria, which unlike most living organisms can survive for millennia in the right conditions.

Each hay bacillus bacterium can store two megabits -- the equivalent of 1.6 million Roman letters. The scientists can take out the microscopic implants in a laboratory and read them so they appear as ordinary text.

The team at Keio University's Institute for Advanced Biosciences said the technology needs to be perfected but that it was optimistic about its future uses.

Ship Designed to Capsize

This ship with a length of 108 meters is capable of flipping from a horizontal to a vertical position while at sea. Known as the Floating Instrument Platform (FLIP), it is designed to study wave height, acoustic signals, water temperature and density, and for the collection of meteorological data. The most fascinating aspect of it is that the bridge, galley, crew quarters and scientific laboratory and bathroom are designed to be operable in both the vertical and horizontal position. In addition, it is the only ship in the world that is capable of flipping to a horizontal position. This video shows the FLIP in action. More info and pictures can be found after the jump.

The Cobra Tower in Kuwait

These cool pictures are supposed to be pictures of the Cobra Tower yet to be built in Kuwait. Some claims that it’s a hoax while others say that it’s real. Can’t find much information about it though!

Two more images after the jump. Click on images for a larger view.
